The Keys To Great Accuracy

Some of the most frequently asked questions we get here in the sales department involve improving accuracy when using voice recognition software. We have included a few of the best ways to get the maximum benefit from your Dragon NaturallySpeaking voice recognition software.

  • Use a good headset- the use of a good; noise-canceling headset is one of the best ways to obtain good voice recognition. The noise canceling technology in high quality headsets from companies like VXI® and Andrea help to reduce the background noise that can “confuse” the software. Higher quality headsets also help to interpret your voice more accurately into text. Some headsets we recommend are the VXI Aruba or the 10-3. From Andrea®, try the ANC 7100 USB headset or the ANC-700 noise canceling headset with a sound-card connection

  • Check your hardware- For Dragon NaturallySpeaking Pro, Medical or Legal, we recommend at least 256MB of RAM for good performance. The program only requires 128MB, but that amount is the bare minimum required to run the software. We have noticed a dramatic increase in performance at 256 MB of RAM and even more at 512MB. Memory is not very expensive these days and your can go to sites like www.crucial.com to easily upgrade memory if you find that you that you don’t have enough.

  • Software Training- Just like a new pet that you bring home from the store for the very first time, Dragon NaturallySpeaking needs to be trained if you want it to “behave” well. Plan on spending some time with your new software to teach it how YOU say different words and phrases. Here is an excellent excerpt from the Dragon NaturallySpeaking Users Guide for the new 6.0 versions by Dan Newman found on page 165 called “One Minute To Fewer Errors”.

“People’s speech can sounds somewhat differently on different days and at different times. A voice, for example, may sound more gravelly in the morning than in the afternoon and more nasal in the summer than in the winter. The Dragon NaturallySpeaking, however, gives the best results if your voice consistently sounds the same. To improve accuracy, retrain the program for a minute or two so recognizes how your voice sounds. This is the easiest and fastest way to improve accuracy.

To retrain, from the Tools menu on the Dragon bar, click Accuracy Center. In the accuracy center, click Perform additional training. Next, select the text to read from the lists show. Then click Record and read the on-screen passages. This process is just like training Dragon NaturallySpeaking for the first time. In this case, though, you do not need to spend a long time reading. Just read for about a minute or two-- about ten paragraphs. Click Finished and Dragon NaturallySpeaking will save your user files, newly adjusted to how your voice sounds at this time. You should experience better accuracy right away. Do this whenever Dragon NaturallySpeaking is making more errors than usual.

Note that to use this “one minute training”, you must have completed the full 20 minute training once. Completing only the five-minute initial training you did when you first created your user file is not sufficient and the Finished button will be dimmed (unavailable) until you complete the full training.”

That’s it for us. If you have any questions at all about voice recognition, improving accuracy or to discuss higher quality equipment, please don’t hesitate to give us a call here at 21st Century Eloquence. See you next month.
