By "free resources" do you mean "free RAM"? Or do you mean RAM plus swap
space? If you have 50% free RAM, there is no reason your P-II 233 should
"drag"! If you have used up all your free RAM and are down to virtual
memory (disk used as "RAM"), then you definitely need more RAM. You will
notice the disk thrashing. However, with a 128MB SDRAM board, I question
what you are doing that would use it all up? Are you running Win95 or
WinNT? If NT, look at the Task Manager->Performance Tab--Physical Memory
box. That will tell you whether you need more RAM or not.

If the Gateway uses a LX chipset, I believe it supports normal SDRAM
"boards". The non-PC100 SDRAMs are usually 10nsec chips, so they should
work great in an LX board and actually *may* work in a BX board at 100MHz.
I believe the street price is around $135.
