I had astonishingly similar problems to the ones
that you're having. I was so frustrated I was
about to give up on Naturally Speaking
altogether. If you go back and read my posts of
about a month ago. You will see that my
recognition was just atrocious. However, in a fit
of desperation, I called DragonDictate technical
support about the problems with crashing. After
making sure that I was running a clean machine
(nothing in the Startup menu, no temporary files
and running ScanDisk and defrag on a regular
basis), a senior technician sent me a copy of
Naturally Speaking 3.0. I cannot even begin to
express to you the difference that it is made in
my recognition rate. With the old program, on a
very good day my recognition was about 83%. With
3.0, it is about 99.5%. However, I must warn you
that the test was done while I was reading text.
My accuracy is not so high when I am just
dictating email or other documents that I must
think about when I am composing. I think that the
difference in recognition is because when I am
composing, I tend to get sloppy and forget about
announcing my words. However, under any
circumstances (at least for me) Naturally Speaking
3.0 has been an absolute miracle.
One of the nice features of that Naturally
Speaking 3.0 is that you can easily change the
time in which Naturally Speaking recognizes a
word. There is a dialog box that allows you to
change from fast to accurate on a sliding scale.
I have found that the best setting for me is to
have it toward the accurate side of the scale. If
I have it on the fast side, it makes many more
errors. I still think that it is amusing that the
program will come up with nearly any other words
other than the word error. Even after training
the word, it still tries to say heirs, a year's,
Ayers, and yours etc. etc.. However, there have
only been a couple of words that it has had
consistent difficulty with. The other word that
it seems to have difficulty with is Thus, often
the program decides that I meant to say that's.
The bottom line is that you do not have to dictate
slower when you change the accuracy settings. The
only difference I can see is that it takes a
little longer for the words to get on the screen.
However, for people with less powerful computers
that difference may be more noticeable.
The other thing that I did to improve my accuracy
used to change to a Talk Mic. I am using the lapel
model. According to Larry Allen, many people have
trouble with the lapel model. However, it seems
to be working fine for me. I should be getting
the headset model in the mail today or Monday. It
will be interesting to see if the headset model is
more accurate than the lapel model. If it is not
dramatically better, I will probably stick with
the lapel model because it is much more convenient
to use. It is a bit strange that the TalkMic does
not perform so well on the audio setup Wizard but
performs fine in actual dictation settings. Most
of the heirs that makes are related to the quality
of my dictation.
I'm going to call DragonDictate technical support
on Monday because occasionally my correction
dialog box also seems to be deaf. Perhaps, they
have some suggestions. I will let you know what
they tell me.
Please do not be discouraged. This new version
has made all the difference in the world to me.
