I bought Naturally Speaking preferred before I found out
there was a 'Delux' version and at the time there wasn't
an upgrade (which made me very unhappy). I got a copy
of Voice Direct Professional from IMSI and was surprised
to find that it was a version of Dragon Dictate without
the Text-To-Speech module and does just fine for the
command and control. In fact I use it more than
Naturally Speaking (except when I'm writing memos).
Total cost was $160 for NatSpeak + $60 for Voice Direct
professional.
There are some problems however with NT and DragonDicate
(mentioned on the DragonDictate tech support pages).
I think these same problems are there for 'Delux' on NT.
To me it appears that the command queuing for processing
in Dragon Dicate has race conditions. Some times commands
pause while getting processed and take a couple of seconds
to occur. Other times DragonDicate gets stuck in a mode
and I have to use the hot key to turn the mic off and
back on, after I do that it then executes all the commands
that I said before I toggled the hot key. This mostly
happens with the general mouse movement commands so I
always stick to the mouse grid and use the "Nudge"
commands found on the dragon tech support web site.
Finally I had a problem that the 'Switch to Naturally
Speaking' command didn't work (a command used to transfer
control to Naturally Speaking from DragonDicate).
So I just use the Hot Keys to toggle between the two,
one day I'll write a macro to handle the switch to
NatSpeak so I'll just have to use a Hot key to switch
back.
Cheers,
William.
