I think you have a broken mic. From your description, you have the VXI
mic with permanently attached battery box. This mic has a ball joint
made out of plastic, and ordinarily the boom stays where you want it
fairly nicely. However the plastic ball that fits into the socket was
designed poorly. The ball has 4 small slots in it so it can bend
slightly during assembly. Fairly frequently one of the plasic quarters
of the ball breaks during assembly. This problem is invisible unless you
take the ball joint apart, and even then requires close inspection to
see the problem.
