Yes, you should use a better mic than the one in the box (but speaking
technique, enunciation, sound card, etc are more important than the
mic).
No there is no consensus, BUT the good news is there are quite a number
of good mics available for less than $100. Good ones are:
TalkMic (my personal favorite, lightest and easiest to position
correctly)

Shure HW505
VXI (Parrot) 10-3
Plantronics H51N
