As I have stated in a previous post, you cannot use "Bold That" or
"Underline That". It simply does not recognize those commands. But,
what makes this worse, is that, if I manually press "Ctrl+B" to get a
bold code in my document, when I start dictating with NaturallySpeaking,
it kicks me past the bold on and bold off codes. Same thing for when I
am trying to put a manual underline code in my document. Dictation
kicks me past the underline on and underline off codes, and thus, the
text that I dictate is not underlined.
As a workaround for now, I have created two very cumbersome WordPerfect
keyboard macros which type in a couple of xx's, then pause for input (I
have to manually press the return key after the pause), at which time
the macro searches backward for the two xx's, deletes the xx's, selects
the phrase all the way back to the xx's, and then bolds or underlines
that selected text, and then goes to the end of the dictation.
I then created NaturallySpeaking macros to call up those WordPerfect
keyboard macros. Because of the weird way that NaturallySpeaking
dictation reacts to bold and underline codes (always trying to go past
the codes), I had to tweak my WordPerfect macros some more to get them
to work when I call those macros from NaturallySpeaking. In other
words, when I am simply in WordPerfect and press the combination of keys
to call the WordPerfect macro, it would behave in one manner and would
behave in another manner when I use a NaturallySpeaking dictation macro
to call the WordPerfect macro. I am not going to post the WordPerfect
macros for bold and underline because they are incredibly cumbersome and
I am sure someone who is more savvy than I about macros can come up with
a more elegant way to work around this temporary problem.
On the positive side, I am really happy to be able to dictate using
NaturallySpeaking and still take advantage of WordPerfect's automatic
numbering. I use automatic numbering so much in all my documents, I
have really missed this feature. It's a pretty long process to cut and
paste from the NaturallySpeaking editing window into a WordPerfect
document with automatic numbering. Now, I can just work in my
WordPerfect document. Once they get the bothersome little bugs out, the
partnership of WordPerfect and NaturallySpeaking will be a truly awesome
thing. One thing though, with the automatic numbering. I have not yet
figured out how to be able to advance to the next automatic number
without putting in a manual keyboard return. When I dictate in
NaturallySpeaking and say "Next Line" it kicks me past the automatic
numbering. If I say "New Paragraph", it does the same thing. So, I
simply manually hit the return key, and then continue dictating, because
my cursor will be at the correct place to dictate the next automatically
numbered paragraph.
In summary, for right now, I will probably still use the
NaturallySpeaking editing window instead of dictating in WordPerfect for
those documents where I have a huge amount of bolding and underlining
(such as ALL my voluminous file memos). For documents where I need to
use automatic numbering, which is almost all of my letters and
pleadings, I will use WordPerfect with my NaturallySpeaking Deluxe (to
take advantage of the automatic numbering feature in WP), and simply put
up with the pauses in dictation I have to allow when calling up my
bolding/underlining macros (to give them time to work before continuing
dictation).
The combination of WP and NaturallySpeaking Deluxe appears to be fairly
stable. I haven't crashed once while using them together, my "select
and say" works fine, my correction capabilities work fine, and so does
my "playback" of my voice. I did notice one time (out of the many times
so far that I've been using WP/NatSpeak Deluxe together) that I was NOT
able to access my NaturallySpeaking menus within WordPerfect (the
choices were there but greyed out). When I noticed the greyed out
menus, I tested to see if I was still able to dictate, correct, and
listen to playback. I could. But, since my menus to NatSpeak were
greyed out, I simply exited out and came back into WP, fired up NatSpeak
Deluxe through WP, and all my menus for NatSpeak were back up and
available.
Again, once some of these little bugs are worked out, I will be a happy
camper.
