I'm not sure which Shure microphone you are using, but the old Shure
microphones which Dragon use to include with DragonDictate were low
impedance microphones, which I gather from information on the Shure Web
site are generally the ones used by musicians. However, most PC sound
cards, including Sound Blaster cards, are really designed to use high
impedance microphones. When you try use a low impedance microphone with
these cards, you often get insufficient signal level, even with a normal
voice. You should definitely switch to a high impedance microphone
designed to work with the microphone input on Sound Blaster cards. The
parrot series from VXI or the Andrea electronics microphones, such as
those now shipping with NaturallySpeaking, should all work. Other
people on this list will be happy to volunteer their opinions about
which specific microphone to get. I personally find the VXI headsets
more comfortable and stable, although I have heard that the Andrea
ANC-600 headset is an improvement over the previous Andrea models.

This of course is the way to talk to dragons, if you don't want to
reveal your proper name (which is wise), and don't want to infuriate
them by a flat refusal (which is also very wise). No dragon can resist
the fascination of riddling talk and of wasting time trying to
understand it.
