We use them on our demo machines, at trade shows, at my desk and at home
because I love that fact that you are untethered by cables. Another great
feature is that you can adjust the output volume to match your
surroundings. This can be very helpful for those who have a quiet speaking
voice, folks who are in a wheelchair and individuals with limited breath
support. The wireless systems are essentially a radio and hence are
sensitive to radio frequency interference so if you are in an environment
with "noisy" transmissions they might not perform properly. They work much
better than a cordless phone but the principle is the same. We used to
have to use the older Shure wireless that was a very expensive $800. That
one is still available and works even better but is cost prohibitive and
must be carefully mated to an appropriate sound card. It is however much
less susceptible to radio frequency interference but seldom justified.
I also would like to take this opportunity to share the results of some of
the research we have been doing with sound cards. We are finding that the
higher end sound cards that do a better job of recording your speech also
do a better job of picking up noise and interference. In the case of the
Turtle Beach Fiji it does a nice job with frequency response but it is very
sensitive to radio frequency interference. I do not suggest this card if
you have noise generating components in your computer or immediate
environment. It can do a great job but be prepared to spend some time
playing with it. It is too sensitive for most folks. It reminds me of the
days of highend audio where every component that improved the fidelity of
the system brought more problems and noise with greater fidelity.
