I have windows 95, not NT, but a similar problem is described in the
readme.wri file in the DragonDictate directory (search for the word
"Generic"). The cause of the problem described there is that in Windows
NT 3.51 if you run a 16-bit application in a separate memory space from
the one in which DragonDictate (also a 16-bit application) is running,
then DragonDictate cannot detect what application is running. The
problem that people have been having recently seems to be somewhat
different, since in at least one case involves MSDEV which is a 32-bit
application. Also, I vaguely remember reading that the NT architecture
change somewhat between NT 3.51 and NT 4.0, which may also have an
effect. However, I suspect that the two problems are not unrelated.
You might try checking how DragonDictate, and any other 16-bit
applications, are set to run. The readme file talks about the program
item properties in the program manager in NT 3.51, so I'm not sure where
the equivalent settings are in NT 4, I would try the properties of the
icon or shortcut in Windows Explorer. Also, if the properties are
contained in the shortcut, that might explain why closing and
re-starting an application, or closing and re-starting DragonDictate
might sometimes have an effect, if a different method was used to start
the program.

This of course is the way to talk to dragons, if you don't want to
reveal your proper name (which is wise), and don't want to infuriate
them by a flat refusal (which is also very wise). No dragon can resist
the fascination of riddling talk and of wasting time trying to
understand it.
