So, if nothing big is running, and a big multithreaded application starts
up, it's threads will be distributed over both processors (this may be
what happens to DD, I don't know how it's threaded).
If the application properly supports multithreading and doesn't
do anything illegal with it's interprocess communication, it will run fine
like this. Now, if a big SINGLE THREAD application is hogging one
processor, the multithreadded application will start up with all its
threads on the same processor, so it can get away with doing things that
are slightly against the rules. This may be the case when Excel is started
up before DD.

So far I've managed to deduce that opening Excel makes the problem go away -- although I have NO idea why!!! Dragon Systems seems to think that switching to NT Workstation might help, although I know NT is not their main concern so I figure I'm really on my own with this. My concern is that if I keep the dual processor machine I'll put NT Workstation on it, but if I'm not happy with it we'll leave NT Server on it. So right now I'm experimenting to see if I can live with it as is. Shutting down the app DragonDictate thinks is "Generic" doesn't fix the problem, I have to reboot (or start Excel, this deserves some more experimentation, though).
