playwave.exe SOME ANSWERS

After downloading and trying Joel Gould's playwave.exe I had a few
problems. However, playwave does work as advertised. It is very
important to make sure that when you use the Windows Recorder to make a
wave file that the recording be made at 11,025 Hz, 16 bit Mono, 22kb. I
thought that I had set it up to record at that rate but apparently the
settings did not "stick" at first. A few questions for you sound
experts out there:
1) Is there a way to find out the settings that a particular recording
was made at. Another way of putting it: if I sent you an email with a
wav attachment, is there a way for to find out if it was recorded, for
example, at 8 bits?
2) Wave files from recordings of speech are huge. Two sentences
recorded at the above settings results in a 681k wave file. I then
tried zipping it in WinZip using maximum compression but it only reduced
the file size by 17% to 569k. Does anyone know of a program that will
compress wav files more than this?
Thanks,
Rose
