Forgive if this is a double-send. I thought I sent this out yesterday, but
don't see it anywhere.
Here is an opportunity where each of us can help focus concerns about
computer use and ergonomics within classrooms while providing important
information to assist in addressing these issues for our upcoming
generations.
Please pass this on to your local school district or region.

Computers in Schools - An International Comparison
Call for Participation
March, 1998
Dear Educator,
We would like to invite you to take part in a survey regarding computer use
in your school region or district.
During the 1980's computers were introduced into offices at a rapid pace.
The process was so quick that little thought was given to the impact the
new technology might have on computer users. The result was an increase in
illnesses such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Today, computers are being
introduced into schools at a similarly rapid pace. The brief , five page
survey, to be filled out by one person in each school of a district or
region, seeks to discover what ergonomic considerations are taken into
account when planning computer work and workstations in the school
environment.
The questionnaire was developed by The National Institute for Working Life
in Sweden, a government institute that carries out research, development
and educational activities concerning work life, including work environment
and occupational health. Developed to assess the situation concerning
computers and computer work in Stockholm schools, it has been expanded into
an international study. The goal is to compare the state of computer-aided
education in 13 to 15 countries. In the US, we would like the participation
of as many districts and regions as possible.
The survey is being distributed in Sweden by the National Institute for
Working Life, in Japan by the National Institute of Health, in Italy by the
Institute of Occupational Health, and in the USA by Nova Solutions, Inc.
We will not identify results as being from individual schools, but only as
a summary of all schools in a particular category. We will send a summary
of the results to all who respond.
All data must be collected by the end of the school year.
If your school district or region would be interested in participating,
please contact:
