Since there has been only one version of Deluxe released, it's hard to
say what Dragon's ususal process is. So far, upgrades from Personal v1
to V2 have been inexpensive, as has the upgrade from Personal v1 to
Preferred v2. However the regular upgrade price from Personal or
Preferred to Deluxe is fairly hefty (400-500 or therabouts).
OTOH, Dragon has shown a fleet-footed appreciation for the competition
from ViaVoice, and has dramatically lowered prices to keep in line...
Personal V1 was first sold at about $700 I believe, I considered myself
lucky to get the "early bird special" at $300. Dragon also seems to make
special discounts available to anyone who orders the programs before
they start shipping.
I never used Dragon Dictate, but I remember there are quite a few DD
users who have not been happy at some of Dragon's upgrade policies. Also
Dragon kinda shafted its whole reseller group when it started selling
the programs direct, then let CompUSA sell them, then cut the prices to
less than the wholesale price the resellers paid for them. I sypathize
with the resellers that took it on the chin, but I'm not sure Dragon had
much choice against the marketing muscle of IBM.
