This is just my opinion, but the AWE64 gold doesn't have as clean a
layout as many boards that cost much less. They cram so much stuff
(wavetable synth, IDE controller, etc) on that little board that there
just isn't room left for the components you need to get quiet audio. Gold
plating will not help.
