Actually, I'm a computer book author with a proposal out on
this very subject. I've been trying to send a post to this
list about it for months-- let's see if it shows up this
time. . . .
My proposal is for an end-user book on speech recognition.
The proposal has been out for about 3 months, with nothing
more than nibbles. Given the nature of computer books, it
would probably focus on one product, with the possibility
of covering others in later books.
Right now, my proposal is being rejected because the
publishers do not think there's enough of a market for the
book. I know that the people on this list are already into
speech recognition, but I would like to get a rough idea of
how many people would purchase a book on products from
Dragon, IBM, or Lernaut&Hauspie, and which products should
be written about first. This is for market research
purposes-- I want to write something that will fill a need,
not just my pocketbook (I could write books on FrontPage or
Photoshop or web design if I wanted cash). Any additional
suggestions, such as subject matter, format, or technical
depth is, of course, appreciated.
As an adjunct to this, I have had some interest in a short
Speech API book. Unfortunately, I'm a writer, not a
programmer, and my experience with APIs is non-existent.
Are there any speech programmers on this list who would be
willing/interested in co-authoring such a book? If so,
please contact me privately at steph@@scottrell.com to
discuss this possible project.
Thank you,
S. Cottrell
