Did he install as the same user? It's possible that he installed as
Administrator or someone else, then when he wanted to use the files,
didn't have permission to open them (this is only on an NTFS
partition).

Try to get him to use the 'Take Ownership' option if all else fails
to wrench ownership to himself (he needs permissions for this as
well). I can't say this will work so don't look at me if it goes
wrong, but it's what I'd do if I was having these problems.
