I should preface my remarks by saying that I use DragonDictate and
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Deluxe, and that my experience with IBM's voice
products is limited to simply speaking gold, which I used briefly but
intensively in an attempt to explore all of its features and
capabilities. I will confine my comments about IBM's products to the
part of their interface which is shared by simply speaking gold and
ViaVoice Gold. As always, if I describe any part of the IBM products
incorrectly, I would appreciate it if someone with more knowledge could
correct me.
The short answer is, it depends what you need.
A number of people on this list use voice recognition software because
they have disabilities or computer-related injuries and need to be able
to operate a computer either entirely or nearly hands-free. For those
users, DragonDictate or NaturallySpeaking (with its included copy of
DragonDictate) is generally a better option, because Dragon Systems has
spent a great deal of time working on interface which allows virtually
everything on the computer to be operated by voice, as well as allowing
extremely efficient correction by voice. I have only used simply
speaking gold, not ViaVoice Gold, but my understanding is that the
command and control interface and correction systems are very similar,
and I know that the week I spent trying out simply speaking gold was
incredibly frustrating for me, so much so that resorted to using the
keyboard enough to provoke a significant flare up of my RSI.
A number of people on this list use voice recognition software for
programming or Unix commands, and they generally find that the macro
system of DragonDictate and NaturallySpeaking Deluxe is essential to
that sort of work, and that IBM's macro system, particularly their
system for control macros is simply inadequate for that task. My
impression of simply speaking gold was that it was quite a good product
if you were dictating standard English text, but that it was not
flexible enough to do the kind of work I need to get down a daily basis.
I have not used ViaVoice Gold, so I cannot comment on the relative speed
accuracy of continuous dictation in the two products.

Well, well! It cannot be helped, and it is difficult not to slip in
talking to a dragon, or so I have always heard.
