First, thanks for this excellent resource. I checked out the archives
before buying NaturallySpeaking Preferred, and your contributions were a
great help. I also bought my first PC to use NS; I'm a writer of books
and for magazines such as Macworld, so I've always been a Mac guy. My
previous experience with voice recognition came with Power Secretary on
the Mac. But now I've got to finish a book faster than I (or Power
Secretary ) can type, not to mention incipient tendonitis...
Here's the problems I'm having:
I've picked up a 233 Mhz AMD K6-based Compaq Presario 4540, and upgraded
it to 48 Mb of RAM. I'm using a SoundBlaster16 PnP card and the Shure
SM10a mic from PowerSecretary (the mic that came with NS isn't as
comfortable). I've installed Office 97, NS Preferred 2.02, and
NaturalWord. Training went well, and accuracy is improving as expected
(I've only had the PC for a week).
I can use NaturalWord within Word 97, but when I go to exit Word after a
work session, the machine hangs. What seems to happen is this:
1) I issue the Exit command.
2) NaturalWord asks if I want to save my voice files.
3) I click Yes; the files are saved.
4) The cursor changes to the I-beam, and Word97 hangs. I can still
operate in other applications.
When I press Control-Alt-Delete to restart, I get a dialog that tells me
that NS is not responding. Clicking End Task makes the machine totally
freeze up. Sometimes I get a dialog telling me that the DDE Server is not
responding. Huh?
I've tried the following:
1) Uninstall and reinstall NaturalWord. No change.
2) Attempted to uninstall NaturallySpeaking. I'm unable to do so, because
when I insert the CD, the Uninstall option is grayed-out and unavailable.
I can't find a Dragon uninstall program on my hard disk, either.
3) Windows reports that it cannot uninstall NS via the Add/Remove
Programs Control Panel, due to a "missing DLL."
I'd like to be able to exit Word without having to crash my machine. I'd
like to be able to try and see if reinstalling NS would do the trick. If
anyone has any ideas about how to attack these problems, I'd appreciate
it.
Thanks,
Tom Negrino
