On my system, the device drivers bear the name of the chipset. Go to
Control Panel( start menu-> settings-> control panel), open
multimedia, choose the audio tab. Under "Preferred Device", what I
see is "ESS audio playback device" and "ESS audio record device".
This means I have the (gasp) dreaded ESS chipset.

The ess chipset is reportedly noisy. Using my new TalkMic, in the
audio setup wizard's F1 screen, I get an adequate signal to noise
ratio, but the noise part of the signal is much higher than was
recommended in earlier discussion on this list. I forget the exact
figures.
My recognition isn't terrible, but it isn't great either. Dictating
the last paragraph, I got enough errors to drive me nuts.
If you have the option, pick a chipset recommended on this list. If
your stock with a particular chipset, as I am, a good microphone
certainly helped me.
