As I said in a private message to Judy, I suspect that the laptop's internal
sound card may be more of a limiting factor than the talk mic. However, when
I listen to the playback of the .wav file created by the audio test tool, the
sound is pretty clean in both cases.

I haven't checked yet. It is a pretty standard laptop chipset, and, to me at
least, sounds miles better than the ESS688 I had in my earlier laptop.
