Also unlike DragonDictate the tracking functionality is not present in
naturally speaking. This functionality is one of DragonDictate's most
powerful features because it allows you to utilize most software packages
(well at least ones written well enough so that they register the names of
their pull down menus and buttons with the Windows subsystems) *without*
having to create macros by hand. Tracking reads the menu names and button
names back and automatically creates the macros. This makes upgrading
software versions easier as well. The lack of the tracking functionality
means that to utilize naturally speaking with other software you must
program the macros by hand which is time consuming the first time. If you
upgrade versions you may need to reprogram your macros as well.
Presently I'm using a two audio board system with DragonDictate on one board
and naturally speaking on another. This allows me to manipulate naturally
speaking from DragonDictate like any other program. Actually though I still
mostly use DragonDictate for dictation. I personally haven't gotten
comfortable yet with continuous dictation. I also find that naturally
speaking's correction mode is cumbersome when you have limited typing
capabilities.
I'm probably still going to hold out for Dragon Systems to realize that the
recognition engine of naturally speaking combined with the command and
control functionalities of DragonDictate would make an unbeatable product in
that it would really truly allow total hands free control of your computing
environment. I'm sure they'll get there. Probably just not quick enough
for those of us who have been around their products for a while and see the
potential they have yet to achieve :-).
