The best algorithm is probably to reject messages based, not on whether
the individual is subscribed to the list, but whether an nslookup can be
performed on the domain in the From header. This solution is used by many
system administrators to filter spam before it enters their system. I have
no idea if it can be done for a mailing list. If the list is run off a
Unix system, something could certainly be thrown together to filter the
mail before it reached the mailing list software; I'd be willing to help
figure out the specifics.
