*******CALL FOR PARTICIPATION******* Speech User Interface Design Challenges CHI 97 Workshop on Speech Recognition Deadline for position papers: Extended to February 2, 1997 Susan Boyce, AT&T Laboratories Amir Mane, AT&T Laboratories Demetrios Karis, GTE Laboratories Nicole Yankelovich, Sun Microsystems Laboratories The purpose of this one-day workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners to collaborate on solutions to a variety of real-world speech interface design problems. In last year's CHI workshop (see the October 96 issue of the SIGCHI Bulletin), we discussed the challenges of speech user interface design. This year, we will hold a hands-on working session. Small sub-groups will discuss and propose solutions to design exercises derived from position papers submitted by the attendees. Each design exercise will be followed by a critique of the proposed solutions by the entire group. Interested participants should submit a (text-only) position paper of no more than 1,500 words suggesting an interesting speech user interface design problem. Position papers must be submitted by February 2nd, 1997. The design problems should be as specific as possible. For example: * How can a list of items be effectively presented if the list contains 3 items, 10 items, or more than 10 items? * In a form-filling application, what is the best way to present default choices? * In multimodal applications including speech, how should input focus be determined? Should it be based on the window system's scheme of focus or some other scheme? Design problems such as "What is the best way to detect and correct errors?" or "How can help be provided in speech-only systems?" are too broad. In the position paper, please: * Explain why the problem you have chosen is a problem. * Explain how and when does it manifest itself? * Illustrate the problem with concrete examples of dialogs from real systems. If this is not possible, create imaginary examples. * Do NOT suggest solutions! * Please include a short biography that has a sentence or two about your experience in designing speech interfaces. Participants will be selected on the basis of the clarity and relevance of the design problem and their experience with speech interfaces. Preference will NOT be given to those who participated in the CHI'96 workshop, although they are encouraged to submit a position paper again this year. Prior to the start of the workshop, participants will be expected to read all the position papers as well as experiment with several telephone-based speech applications. This one day workshop is limited to 16 people.
