- How much memory do I need to run Kurzweil VOICE for Windows?
For the 30,000 word vocabulary option, you need 8 MB of DEDICATED RAM.
For the 60,000 word vocabulary option, you need 16 MB of DEDICATED RAM.
Note: This does not include the memory required for
Windows applications and the operating system. For Windows 95 you will
need a total of 16MB of RAM for a 30,000 word vocabulary; or a total of
24MB for a 60,000 word vocabulary. For Windows 3.1, you will
need a total of 12-16 MB or 20-24MB of RAM for the 30,000 word
vocabulary or 60,000 word vocabulary, respectively.
- What is DEDICATED RAM?
RAM dedicated to Kurzweil VOICE for Windows is the random access memory
required in addition to the RAM required for your Windows applications and
operating system.
- My system is slow when I run Kurzweil VOICE for Windows; what can I
do to remedy this?
Verify that you have adequate memory (RAM) for the vocabulary installed.
(Refer to question #1.)
It is recommended that you install a 18-30 MB permanent swap file. A swap
file larger then 30 MB may cause a decrease in the response time. Windows 95
will allocate the appropriate swap file size; however, you must have enough disk
space available for Windows to allocate space for this file size.
Check your system configuration to make sure it is correct

- I already have a sound card in my system. Can I use that to run
Kurzweil VOICE for Windows?
Kurzweil VOICE for Windows Release 2.x is compatible with the Sound
Blaster 16 platforms from Creative Labs, as well as other 16 bit Microsoft
Windows compatible sound cards*.
- What hardware platform do you recommend?
We suggest you run Kurzweil VOICE for Windows Release 2.x on a
Pentium-based IBM compatible desktop or laptop with a Sound Blaster 16
compatible sound board.
- Can I run Kurzweil VOICE for Windows from a network?
Yes, Kurzweil VOICE for Windows Release 2.x can be installed on
networks compatible with Microsoft Windows, and requires 40 MB of dedicated
hard disk space on the server. Users can then access their voice profile
from a workstation that has a supported sound card.
- I would like to install Kurzweil VOICE for Windows Release 2.x on a
network, can I buy one copy and install it on my network? What is the cost
per user?
Kurzweil VOICE for Windows Release 2.x can be installed on a network;
however, you must have a license for each user of Kurzweil VOICE for Windows
Release 2.x.

- Can I run Kurzweil VOICE for Windows Release 2.x on a PowerMac? OS/2
IBM Warp? MicroChannel? Windows NT?
Kurzweil VOICE for Windows Release 2.x is not currently compatible with
OS/2, Windows NT, the PowerMac or MicroChannel.
Currently, Kurzweil VOICE for Windows Release 2.0 only runs on
Windows 95, Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
- Can I use Kurzweil VOICE for Windows on my UNIX based system
(Xwindows)?
Kurzweil AI does not support a UNIX based environment. However,
Kurzweil has been informed that some users have had success using UNIX with a
Windows-based terminal emulation program.
- I have a Compaq PC, and Kurzweil VOICE for Windows is not seeing all
the memory in my system. How do I deal with this?
Some Compaq PCs are unable to access anything greater than 16 MB of RAM.
Contact Compaq and ask them to provide you with the files you need for your
system to access more than 16 MB of RAM.

- Does Kurzweil VOICE for Windows Release 2.x work with all versions of
supported applications?
Kurzweil VOICE for Windows works with the two most recent versions
of the supported applications. Most versions of an application will work
with the predefined commands delivered with Kurzweil VOICE for Windows. If
you experience problems with your application check the Applications section
of the .ini file, (kv31.ini or kv95.ini) located in your default directory
(c:\kvwin), and properly associate your application's executable with the
file that contains the commands for the supported version of the
application.
The following example shows the WordPerfect 6.0a executable file
associated with the WordPerfect 6.1 predefined vocabulary commands list in
the .ini file:

in On-Line Help for a list of supported application versions and step by
step instructions for adding a new application.
- How can I ensure good voice recognition performance?
Always turn off your microphone when you are away from your desk or not
speaking. You can turn off your microphone in any of the following ways:
use the ctrl-alt keystroke.
say "stop-listening".
use
your mouse to click on the microphone on/off indicator located on the Kurzweil
VOICE Center window.
Refer to the instructions on the "Read Me" button in the
Recognition Wizard.
Review the instructions on the "New User" screen when creating
a new user profile.
Note: If you hear a buzzing noise in your headset, you
should move farther away from your monitor. The buzzing noise can corrupt
your voice profile.
- How many more words can I add to the vocabulary. Do you have
specialized vocabularies?
Kurzweil VOICE for Windows provides the following vocabulary options:
A 30,000 word vocabulary that consists of 20,000 speaker independent words,
with the ability to add 10,000 more words.
A 60,000 word vocabulary that consists of 40,000 speaker independent words,
with the ability to add 20,000 more words.
Both of these vocabularies options are geared toward general business
use. People in more specialized professions such as Law and Medicine can also
use Kurzweil VOICE for Windows in their work, or may prefer using a special
products called VoiceMED and
Wildcard
LawTalk.
