Cant get past the sound levels test

I installed SoundPlus and after creating a user, was advanced to the "sound levels" check, specifically the Background noise "check. I havent been able to get beyond it because of a "noise too loud" error. I have done everything correctly, have a totally compata=ble card, adjusted the mike dozens of times and dozens of ways. I even pulled the mike out and turned off all input functions, thinking maybe there could be a buzz or something like that. Even then i get the same message.
HELP!!!!
