Voice recognition for 2nd graders

I am interested in incorporating VR technology in the second grade classroom (age 7-8yrs) as a means of improving young students' writing skills. I'd like to know if anyone has had experience using VR software with children. My initial experiments with both Via Voice and Naturally Speaking lead me to believe that current generation s/w is not designed to "learn" young voices.
