Sound card compatability

I have problems with IBM VoiceTYpe Simply speaking installation.When I run the mic setup programme it puts a mute on the wave input and no sound comes thru.When I take the mute off I get sound OK, but when I run the speech recognition routine it stops after I say a few words, and on retest it stops after the first word.
I have an ESS 1869 sound card with drivers from the Win 98 cd, has anyone struck incompatability problems with this combination?
