When I first bought ViaVoice98, I thought, "OK, it appears to
have good command and control capability and adequate
dictation accuracy.". But much to my surprise I've discovered that it is an excellent tool for surfing the Internet.
Picture this: You're looking at the icons on your desktop and see the one for the site that you wish to visit (e.g. "Slate Magazine"). You say "Go to Slate". The site opens. Then you record a series of Navigation Macros. This allows you to open
any underlined item on the page simply by saying "Slate 1",
"Slate 2", etc., for example. If you only plan to visit
a web site once, you can say "Field Down 10". That takes you
to the tenth underlined item on the page. You say "OK"
and the tenth item opens up. But what's really neat is that you can say "Edit", "Select All", and "Begin Reading". Your computer reads the web page article to you in a synthesized voice. What a great way to avoid having to use the mouse while
preventing eye strain at the same time! The one thing that I haven't figured out is how to select only a portion of the article using your voice. If anyone else has done so, please let me know.
