I have had the same problem on and off. Usually I just try everything and something kicks it in. My most recent experience taught me that I had somehow turned off the microphone on the speech card software, at least I think that was where it was. Im not home right now with my computer so I can't list the exact steps but you might want to try to find out if it is turned on.
Check your cables too, make sure your mic is in the right port.
