The following was a response I received from my question about changing the processor that I asked on a PC forum. I supose this type of response shows why many people just don't even try VR because from what I have read on this forum acuracy in the region of 98% is possible and even if it is not as in my case VR is a great help when inputting text with Welsh words that are not recognised. The time saved is done by using the "Spellthat" function.

"From my understanding... as far as voice recognition goes, it's only as good as the software, which really isn't all that great and has about reached it's limit until artificial intelligence can be used to provide additional information to the software, such as the position of the speaker's lips.

So from a hardware point of view, you just need enough RAM for the software to run comfortably (if you keep your machine clean and limit the processes starting I suspect 128 may be enough for a 9x OS), then you just need sound input of a quality as high as the software can deal with - so I guess separate sound card and reasonable mic are probably well recommended.

I presume better voice recognition packages will be better, but only up to a point and I'm not sure the difference will be by all that much between the top few... IBM ViaVoice is about the only name I seem to remember."

Brian,

Isn't it amazing how much misinformation non-voice recognition users are willing to impart? Unfortunately, some of that(such as the requireed amount of RAM)is perpetuated by the manufacturer.

At least the person responding did not pretend to be an expert! :-)
