Dear Tom and all,
I asked about installing a mobile recorder v.4 without wiping my version 5 files. Ihave followed Tom Perry's initial advice, and am now at the stage: "Get that working first, and somebody here will step in to tell you how to transfer your vocabulary files from your existing user to your new Mobile Recorder user."
I would now like to know how to transfer my vocabulary files from my existing user to my new mobile recorder user.(mind you, I'm not sure I have vocab files, I think I have been muddling along with DNS without knowing much, without discovering this fabulous forum - but still, DNS has been a "hand"-saver, if not a life-saver).

Cheers,
Kel

VR User?: 10 years
Which Program?: NaturallySpeaking Pro 8.0
Why do you Use VR?: 1. I'm disabled 2. at home 3. ex-academic (disability retirec)
Where are you Located: Cardiff, Wales

Kel

I am trying to work out the best way to do this -- the normal way of transferring user files won't work (or may, if the registry is edited or some file names are changed).

Could you check your NaturallySpeaking/Users directory to see whether there are two users there? If so, could you list the files in both users' Current/General and Current/Voice directories, together with their sizes? Thank you!

Judy,

I can't find the URL right now, but maybe you know it and can post it for Joel Gould's "GetWords/PutWords" that Kel can download. As I recall Joel posts the instructions for using it on his site.

I believe that's how I had to do the transfer of files with my VoiceIt and I don't think Version 4 GetWords conflicts with a PutWords into Version 5 if my memory serves me right.

I'm sorry; I thought you meant copy user files over! Then I realised you didn't but my mind went blank....

Yes, I have the url for getwords/putwords; Kel, here it is: these programs will transfer words you added to the first user, from that to the Mobile one.

But I think it would be best if you didn't transfer the acoustic information -- see the instructions on the web page -- Tom, what do you think? (I don't know how different the users will be)

Agree! Just transfer the vocab files using GetWords/PutWords. Accoustical files shouldn't be transferred over.

Hi guys,

I'm sorry I didn't read this yesterday -- for some reason I didn't get the e-mail telling me there was a response. I will have a go at it, but I have been reading Podge's posts with interest and I am wondering if it would be better to duplicate my existing user files and substitute them over the new user files for the recorder. But is this crossing some sort of DNS taboo?

Hello again,

Well thanks to that website, Judy, I have now found my custom words and a very pretty pathetic lot they are too, not really worth transferring over. I am amazed that I have been able to stagger along for a year in so much ignorance. I am a journalist and I use DNS preferred version 5 to write text in the DragonPad, of course, and in Word and in our e-mail software, GroupWise, and in the page making software Quark Xpress, and sometimes onto live forms on the Internet (but not the voice recognition Forum!). I am only using the microphone that came out of the box and I guess I've got used to doing corrections, speaking fairly clearly, and putting up with gremlins. However, I would be very interested in copying my existing user files over for use by the DNS recorder since on first using it after the training session, it seemed to be very much going back to square one. Tom says acoustic files shouldn't be transferred over, but is that just when upgrading? If I'm going from V. 5 to V. 4, is that such a problem?

I am going to see a local reseller next week and I might end up writing an article about voice recognition. Would you mind if I mention this Forum? The Journal I work for is distributed to around 20,000 lawyers in New South Wales.

I also wonder how you test for accuracy and how important the preferred versus professional versions are -- though I guess that's a matter of personal preference. I shall keep scanning past and present posts (not to mention the DNS help files!) to improve my understanding of what I feel is a very valuable tool.

Thanks again,
kel

Kel hello

don't copy the files over; Mobile users are different from desktop ones.

>>>

journalists may not need that many custom words; NaturallySpeaking's vocabulary is pretty good.

>Would you mind if I mention this Forum?

You need to ask the people who host and run it! - but I have no objection

>>>
I also wonder how you test for accuracy
>>

there's no real agreement on that. Some people have test p***ages and use them to count percentages. I simply dictate a couple of sentences immediately after initial training so I am sure that's gone well, then run Vocabulary Builder. I think your recognition's probably on the low side!

If you want macro capabilities, get Professional. There are other differences, but that's the important one

Which Program?: DragonDictate then DNS
Why do you Use VR?: Ease, speed, and to stay current to assist disabled clients

Kel,

>Would you mind if I mention this Forum?

Now that you know what we have to offer, I think that you would be very remiss if you didn't!

I am not sure if i thas been mentioned, but very few people achieve the same accuracy with a recorder as opposed to dictating directly into the computer.
