Recently (just over 30 days ago, unfortunately) I purchased Dragon Naturally Speaking from Amazon.com. Because of serious illness, it was several weeks before I got around to installing the software. The first thing I found out was that it WOULD NOT RUN under Windows xp. None of the internet links, phone numbers for support supplied with the program would work. On searching the internet I found there were two versions of the Software on the the market. They are versions 5.0 and 6.0. Apparently,Dragon Systems was sold out or went under.

Rights to Version 5.0 are owned by Broderbund. Version 6.0 and after is owned by Scansoft. On going to the Broderbund support page, I was told that Broderbund did not support the software. By special arrangement I could get support from Scansoft. Perhaps you will not be surprised that Scansoft does not seem particularly in supporting 5.0.

In fairness, I did get one free phone call. There was a simple fix to get the program to run.

I was able to use the program for only ONE day. The next morning the USB cable was accidentaly pulled loose. It was put back in the same slot. The program would not run. No matter what I doI get the same error message
"Cannot load speach processing file."
I visited the Scansoft knowledge base and found only six items and only one on Ver.5.0 which does not solve the problem.

I rather resent having to pay $19.95 just to get the program to run. Furthermore, this must be a common problem, experienced by many people. I feel there is no excuse for not having that fix posted in Scansoft's knowledge base.

I don't need any special hand holding to use the software. For that a reasonable fee is not - unreasonable. I just need to get the program to run. I can take it from there.

I have.t seen any messages here regarding Ver 5.0 so perhaps I'm in the wrong place. Anyway it seemed worth a shot.

If anyone out there can help me with this I would be most grateful.

TomV,

With Windows XP, you can pick the operating system emulation required by the program. Try doing a reinstall and pick W2K.

Tried fix recommended which is basically what I did earlier but thought it worth a try. I could hve made a mistake. Recommended fix did not work. After dns 5.0 reinstalled I get -`same error message as before.

(Signal processing file could not be loaded. Check Dragon log for problems.)

This has something to do with the accidental revoval of the USB connector after using the program just one day. The first time I tried to use the program after the usb plug was pulled loose, the program failed to work. I have not been able to use the program since.

I believe there has to be a real simple fix for this problem which must be fairly common. I really feel there should a fix for this specific problem posted on the Scansoft Knowledge base.

Many thanks for your suggested help. If any one has a suggested solution for this problem I would sure be glad to hear it.

As it is, I leaning toward cutting my loss and looking as IBM Via Voice. Any folks have any input on comparison. Thanks again

Sorry, I forgot about the USB plug being pulled then put back; I meant to mention that earlier. That may now not be properly installed or recognised. You could if it is working properly (recording into Windows Recorder would show that) run a repair install of NaturallySpeaking 5.0; insert the CD and it will give you that (repair) option; that will repair the system files.

THANKS!

I have tested and know microphone is working properly. I can record speech and play it back using mike. If I understand correctly you are suggesting the mike might be working but dns 5.0 doesn't know it's working. I'll try your suggestion.

Thanks to all who tried to help me. I had tried all the fixes suggested,nothing..worked. Evidently the usb microphone coming loose corrupted some files. In the knowlege base for dns 5.0 there was no mention of this problem. In the dns 5.0 help files there was no mention of the error message I kept getting. This is a simple problem IF you know what to do.

The solution is to delete your user profile and speech files. Then create a new user and retrain the program. Dns 5.0 works just fine now.

TomV,

I am glad to hear that you are up and running again! Sometimes we get a little to tired of reading dragon logs but,in this case, we probably should have asked you to post one.

Happy dictating,
