I spent some time getting the scansoft technotes on select and say in "other programs" (not word, dragonpad etc. but other windows apps) ...but the DLL file referred to (Nssystem.ini) does not exist...either within the Dragon Program Folder, or anywhere else on the hard disk. I found no other .ini file including the [enable module names] heading referred to in the technotes. (tried a repair and a reinstall with no change on this issue).

I assume that the technote is therefore only concerned with Version 5 Pro? I also tried did the alternative registry hack to include the "enable module names" and although it did not prevent the program working normally, it did not invoke select and say in the relevant programs I tried out... (dreamweaver 4 and MX, and photoshop 6 & 7) though straight dictation into these programs coninued to work as before. Also, select and say still worked in dragonpad, and word xp. As the hack had no effect, I reverted back to the original keys which include only wordpad, notepad, and natspeak.

Anyone know a way to get select and say to work properly in other apps please??

Thanks.

Specs:

Athlon 1Ghz, 256Mb Ram, Windows ME (also tried it on XP) british english vocabulary, soundblaster live! value, talkmic pro nc mic.

Ross.

Hi Ross,

See that you are still using that Athlon - guess I couldn't convert you.

I am not sure what .dll you are referrinf to, but my nssystem.ini is in C:Program FilesDragonNaturallySpeakingProgram. I also have backup nssystem.ini files.

People espouse different ways of enabling "Select and Say" in programs, and one or two have actually worked, but generally if the app itself isn't "Select and Say" compliant then you dictate one phrase at a time. Either that, or be prepared to say(for example) "Move up 13", "Move left 11", "Select next 5 words" and then "Correct That".

Good to see you back!

John

oops, a late night and a busy weekend ;-)

disregard the "dll", it is an .INI (.ini) file that the technote refers to. The technote states that the *.exe of the application you are trying to get to comply to select and say should be inserted first, followed by a huge string of numbers in curly brackets. Of course, to do this, you need to have the nssystem.ini file present on your computer in the first place...!

Thats basically what I was asking...it seems that only the pro version of dns installs that particular ini file?? I have opened every single .ini file in the entire dragon folder, and non of them have that [enable........] section either :-(

That means (I think) that dns preferred cannot be customised to use select and say in named applications because the ini file needed to do this is not available anyway...

boooo! :-)

on the subject of the athlon....I always support the underdog....karate kid was my favourite movie....(only kidding).... but intel need the competition, and the athlon kicks the pentium into a corner when it comes to graphical applications, which I use intensively for my web design business.

Did I mention that it runs naturally speaking superbly too? LOL.... thanks for the wb John, I am still repairing that damaged house - the one the tenant tried to demolish? With luck I will be done by Christmas...and able to participate properly once again...sorry!

If anyone has figured out how to get select and say to work specifically with dns5 preferred, in macromedia dreamweaver, I will award a gold star! It works already for straight dictation, of course, but select and say would be awfully handy at times...

c ya...

Ross.

Ross,

If nothing else, this should convince you to finally upgrade to the Pro version! I understand that you can get Pro 5 quite cheaply at places like eBay, etc.. If you went to version 6 then you would probably have to get a "real" computer! ;-)

How much damage did she do? From the time factor it sounds like you are having it gutted and starting from scratch. I miss reading about it on your website.

Ross

I think if a program can be enabled, then the old Registry method should do it. The problem is that unless you have a program called Spy ++, which is part on one of the Basic programming languages, you can only do it by trial and error.

But if you have Professional you can use one of the Dictation Box options that extend Select and Say.

Sorry not to be more helpful. I don't understand why you don't have the file
