I have come across vocabulary add-on products and was curious on how exactly these products are used in conjunction with DNS. As an example, I would assume a client in the Radiology field would want to obtain DNS Medical with the Radiology vocabulary add-on. Could someone please elaborate upon how to implement this type of solution as well as any of the benefits of using the vocab add-ons.
Thanks for your time and support, Marc Solomon -------------------- Marc

QUOTE(ulva @ Mar 21 2006, 01:47 PM) I have come across vocabulary add-on products and was curious on how exactly these products are used in conjunction with DNS. As an example, I would assume a client in the Radiology field would want to obtain DNS Medical with the Radiology vocabulary add-on. Could someone please elaborate upon how to implement this type of solution as well as any of the benefits of using the vocab add-ons. Thanks for your time and support, Marc Solomon These products basically supply alternate vocabularies for specialized needs. Most are aimed at the medical market. Some of these vocabularies (for instance, radiology) directly overlap and compete with the vocabularies now in DNS Medical. Keep in mind that as late as Release 6, there was only 1 medical vocabulary. Now there are several -- see http://knowledgebase.scansoft.com/view.asp?tnID=6196 for a list of specialties covered in DNS 8. Release 8 had MAJOR increases in the number and quality of medical vocabularies. Some of the vocabularies offered by other companies cover specialties that are not well-covered in DNS 8. Financially, these vocabularies make more sense to me when used with DNS Professional than DNS Medical. If you bought the Voice Automated Radiology vocabulary AND DNS Medical, effectively you'll pay twice for the Radiology vocabulary. There are two types of specialty vocabulary vendors. One type is companies such as Voice Automated and Trigram who do document analysis, gather vocabulary and in my view are quite credible. A second type are the vendors that just deliver a word list to be imported into their products. Those don't deserve to be called vocabularies! The lists may have lots of words, but they don't necessarily have appropriate words and they introduce 1000's of words rarely used within the specialties. These aren't credible as vocabularies, but the lists could be edited and then used by someone trying to get by on a limited budget. If sold for a small amount such as $29 I'd have no argument with these word lists. These shouldn't be called vocabularies, and the suppliers of these in my opinion are mainly trying to fool prospects. Larry Allen http://www.pcspeak.com -------------------- |

Marc,
When you order DNS medical with the radiology vocabulary it all comes bundled together. While some will argue otherwise, many doctors have found that the vocabulary (large) in DNS is sufficient for their needs and they just add words as necessary. Dear Gentlemen,
Thanks for the quick response. Based on your statements, I gather that there is no benefit of purchasing a Voice Automated Radiology vocab if the client has purchased the DNS Medical version. During installation of DNS Medical, choose the appropriate medical vocabulary to make it available for use during dictation. Then add custom medical terms/words on a as-needed basis. The only benefit of these add-on vocabs is when the client does not have DNS Medical and wants to add a specialized medical vocab without upgrading their DNS product. Please let me know if I am on or off track with my summary. Thanks again, Marc Solomon -------------------- Marc

Marc,
You basically have it correct. I know a number of doctors who have created a list of "new" words in .txt format and then added them to the DNS vocabulary. They were all surprised at how few words were not actually there. Dictated with DragonNaturallySpeaking Professional Version 8 |
