I am trying to convince my hospital to invest in DNS8 Pro. They want to know how much space each users voice files will take up on a server. Is it any more than the 500Mb that my files occupy usung DNS7.3 Pro?
Many thanks TudorDoc |

TutorDoc,
It is highly suggested that you do not store your user files on a network drive if you can get away with it. You might want to backup your user files to a network drive so that you can restore when necessary, but keep your user files on the normal directory. If you are switching from machine to machine you may wish to do what Martín and I do which is to keep your voice file on a USB device which you can then download whenever it is necessary. Thanks, but now I am confused. I thought that the main advantage of DNS8 Pro over Preferred was that one could "roam". By putting the voice files onto a usb device could one simply use DNS8 Preferred instead and save lots of money???
That being said could you tell me the size of your voice files so at least I can answer the question posed by my IT department Thanks TudorDoc |

>>That being said could you tell me the size of your voice files so at least I can answer the question posed by my IT department 4,056 Kb, but then I have a lot of specialized commands. You would probably get a better idea of the average times if other users posted the size of their voice files. Mine (8 Pro) are a lot smaller than your 7.0 ones (more like 40mb): do you save .dra files? Judy |

I had looked at the size of the whole folder which includes backups etc. In the current user folder I have 5 subfolders. drafiles 85Mb, General 5.3Mb, Voice 6Mb and two empty folders Ta and TT. I guess if I went the route of carrying my voice setup on a USB key then this is all I would need to transfer? I did go through a phase of saving voice with my files and I wonder if the .dra files in the drafiles folder are from then, although I thought they were saved in the same folder as the document. I am too scared to delete them however! Any thoughts on Pro vs Preferred if all it takes is a USB key to go from PC to PC? Thanks TudorDoc |

tudordoc,
>>Any thoughts on Pro vs Preferred if all it takes is a USB key to go from PC to PC? If you are not taking advantage of the advanced scripting macros available in the Professional Edition or using the medical terminology then you can accomplish straight dictation with the Preferred Edition. The information concerning version 8 being distributable amongst computers is, in my opinion, just a lot of hype. As long as the application has been installed on your C:\ DRIVE then your voice file can be available from anywhere on the network. Marty is the one who gave the idea of carrying your voice file around on a USB device. It works very well! Thanks TudorDoc TudorDoc The .dra files you have are different ones. The Acoustic Optimizer uses them but they are not essential to its working. If you check Conserve disk space required by user files (in Tools/Options/Data) they won't be saved, and you can delete them. [Someone told me whether or not they're created doesn't totally depend on that, but I have that checked and have none of these .dra files.) The current files are I'd say all you need to transfer. >Any thoughts on Pro vs Preferred if all it takes is a USB key to go from PC to PC? What John said! Judy |
