I am an internist that is not very computer literate. My employer has decided that all medical records will be computerized. I have practiced 20 years using dictation. I am very concerned about the length of time it will take to do what my employer wants. The system is windows based. My question: Can I use a medical voice recognition system with a dictation device and attach it to my computer at the end of the day? I realize that I would need to copy each file and paste it into the record filing system we will be using. If this can be done, what system would work best?

Assuming that you have the correct computer requirements, I would suggest the L&H/Dragon Medical Solutions. This is an excellent speech recognition system which includes a medical vocabulary. Let me know if you need any other information.

Dear Dr.,

I have been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional/Medical version 4.0 for approximately one year. I used primarily for short letters to patients regarding lab results or brief hospital daily visit notes. I find it slower and less accurate than a good Medical transcriptionist. It requires a fast Pentium processor, preferably a Pentium 700 millihertz or faster and a large amount of random access memory, preferably > 256 MB. You'll receive an excellent headset microphone with Dragon NaturallySpeaking professional. I've attached a web site that offers many useful products especially microphones. <http://www.dragonsys.ca/>
I recommend you also consider "speak Med " for your medical vocabulary. I think this will be less cumbersome and more accurate than the ad on medical vocabulary from Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I would be glad to communicate with you by e-mail or telephone to give you details about our experience.

Sincerely,
