Lately a few of my commands have stopped working. For example, I wrote a simple script so that if I say "super hyphen" it will print " - ".

Here is the code:
Sub Main
SendKeys " - "
End Sub

It used to work fine, but now when I invoke the command, it shows that it's recognized, as the results box has a blue border, but nothing is typed. I've deleted the command and rewritten it without success. Other commands I've written work, as does normal speech, although I've occasionally seen some other anomolies. Sometimes when I say "period" it's interpreted as a command, although it doesn't seem to do anything, and I can't find a command called period.

I've seen some mention of people running a repair to fix corrupted files. I'm not sure if they were referring to a Windows utility, or a Dragon utility. I can't find such a utility in Dragon, and see no mention of it in the ScanSoft guide.

I am using the 6.1 Medical Edition, running on Windows 2000. Thanks for any help.

Repair's a modified NaturallySpeaking installation; insert the CD and you'll be given the choice of a Repair.

I'm not convinced it will solve this particular problem, but it's certainly worth a try; not every file is reinstalled so it's fast

When I place the disk in the drive, I can't get past the message telling me I need administrator privileges (I'm using this at work where Information Services retains administrator privileges). I don't see any files on the disk that appear to be a repair program. As I'm supposed to be getting upgraded to version 7.0 soon, I guess I will wait and see if that fixes the problem, unless anyone else has any other ideas.

Daniel,

Your IT/IS folks either haven't given you access to all the .exe files on the CD or they haven't loaded them. Most of them do not have a clue about voice recognition. Tell them that you need access to the full CD and they should make it available.

I think I have the full CD, I just don't have administrator privileges, so I can't run the CD. I assume that when the CD is inserted, the auto-install program starts, which is why I can't continue. On your CD do you have an individual file to just run the repair program?

Hello Daniel:

Which commands are not working? there are times I have difficulty with some of my commands. What I do is open the command browser and I train those commands. This seems to help.

Other than this, to get administrative privileges you will have talked to your technical people. They are able to set who has administrative privileges for installing software.

Daniel,

There are several options on the CD, one of which is "repair". As Jim points out, you will likely need administrator rights to run it. If they give you a hassle, just tell them that you only want rights to DNS executables and nothing else on the system.

Jim - The command that I wrote (see my initial post) won't run. I don't think it's a question of training it since it recognized the command correctly, it just doesn't execute it.

I decided to try creating a new user to see if that would fix the problem. I imported the commands I had created, but still experienced the same problems. I then went back to my original user, and for some reason my super hyphen command now works. I still have some problems where certain words that I say seem to be interpreted as commands rather than as text. For example when I say "abdominal pain," the results box shows those words with the blue border but nothing happens. I do not have a command called abdominal pain.

Daniel,

If you can't do a "repair" install then perhaps you should concentrate on pauses between words. DNS expects you to give a slight pause before issuing a command. If you go to Tools/Options/Misc. you will see a slider that sets the amount of pause expected prior to a command. If you are perhaps giving that same amount of pause before saying certain words DNS may be trying to interpret it as a command.

When you get the blue border, what program are you dictating into? I am suspicious that a solitary spoken punctuation in Internet Explorer is being misinterpreted as a command to a link. Like, for example, when you're replying to a forum topic.

I'm also of the belief commands are more taxing to the system then a different spoken form. Would it not be more prudent to use the spoken form instead?

My experiences are based on DNS7 preferred. I have no idea if this advice is applicable in 6.1.

For a temporary fix, hold down the Shift key before dictating such words

I am dictating into a program called EpicCare Hyperspace, Ian. It is an electronic medical record. It's not completely friendly to Dragon, apparently because the 2 companies cannot come to an agreement. Editing is limited. I can't have it select particular text, but can only correct the last phrase I said. But that aside, it has been working fairly well. Regarding the spoken form, how would you say, " - "? I kept getting things like, " -space" which is why I made my "super hyphen" command.

John, it is recognizing the command as it displays it and is not typing text. It just doesn't do the command.

Thanks for the suggestion, Judy, though it's annoying when it's something common, such as "period," which has happend.

I agree -- I thought of it as a temporary expedient. ("Period", +., is easier, you can add that to the Vocabulary with a spoken version "period".)

Your macro idea is a good one for super-hyphen (I take it the problem is that if you say "dash" you get a --). I had a macro that did almost the same thing -- for another program -- but scripted differently; but as you have problems with more than one command, and they originally worked, I'll see if I can find a way other than a Repair install to sort this out.

Hello Daniel:

(1) I find their training commands that I have written which are no longer responding gets them to respond. It isn't a matter of recognition; somehow, this gets the command to act appropriately.

(2) dictating into a nonstandard program. You can attempt to make the program Select-and-Say enable by following the directions given that this link. http://knowledgebase.scansoft.com/view.asp?tnID=5104

(3) if none of these work since I you have DNS-7 you can use the command "show dictation box". This will bring up a box in which you can dictate in which automatically pastes into the application you're using. You can also go to www.speechutilities.com Here he has a utility called "enable that". It is like show dictation box that has a few more bells and whistles.

Daniel,

I just created your macro on my computer and used the same command name - as you can see, it works perfectly. I then change the command and may be very slight change to the macro - it also works perfectly.

My slight change was

Sub Main
SendDragonKeys " - "
End Sub

Since both commands seem to work very well, I go back to the suggestion that you run a "repair" install.

Your second suggestion looks intriguing, Jim. I will need to wait until I have version 7 installed. My "super hyphen" macro is working fine now, although Dragon still sometimes doesn't do anything with certain words, such as "period," even though it correctly recognizes that. I have avoided using commands such as SendDragonKeys as I think I will have less headaches in the long run if I stick to Visual Basic.
