To speed up dictation in MS Word 97, you MUST HAVE the Microsoft SR-1 patch. If you are not sure, click on the help menu and then click on About MicrosoftWord.
You should see this:

Click here and install the Sr1off97 now, if don't have it yet.

Also, if you do not need some of the extra features in MSWord, such as animated text, spell and grammar check while you type, you can turn them turn them off by clicking on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
